His Eminence Metropolitan Methodius of Boston

Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston162 Goddard Ave.

Your Eminence, We recently received word of the death of Metropolitan Emilianos of Siberia and, for the sake of honoring him in what little way we can, l am writing to tell you how very north his life in Christ and his ecumenical ministry meant to us at the Community of Jesus. One of our members met Metropolitan Emilianos at St George's Monastery in Yugoslavia in 1986, at a conference on monastic spirituality sponsored by the World Council of Churches. The Metropolitan took an immediate interest in our young ecumenical monastic community, and insisted on making a visit. Especially during the academic year 1987-1988, when he was visiting professor at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary, Metropolitan Emilianos made several trips to our community, and especially honored us when he attended the funeral of one of our founders in October 1988. The Metropolitan made his heart wide open to us, and we to him, and a lasting bond of love was made between us. We fed upon his messages of instruction and encouragement to us as we strove to be faithful to our own spiritual and ecumenical witness and, in some small measure, we hope that our presence was also of encouragement to him. As recently as October of last year, two of our members saw the Metropolitan once again while attending a conference on the Transfiguration held at Bose. The intensity of his interest in our community's growth and development was as strong as ever and they reported that his eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as they talked together about the Christian life. With all those whose lives he touched, and who came to recognize in him a true kalogheros, we give thanks to God for the beauty that shone forth through the heart of this his faithful servant and son.May his memory be eternal.

In the peace of Christ,

Mother Betty Pugsley, Prioress
