The Metropolis of Boston held its Biennial Clergy-Laity and Philoptochos Conference on Saturday, October 4, at St. Demetrios Church in Weston, MA. More than 250 clergy, lay representatives, and Philoptochos members from throughout New England gathered for a full day of prayer, fellowship, and dialogue focused on strengthening parish life and advancing the mission of the Church.

The conference opened with a joint session bringing together both Clergy-Laity and Philoptochos representatives. Metropolitan Methodios offered an opening prayer and heartfelt greetings, welcoming participants. Metropolitan Methodios then introduced the keynote speaker, Theo Nicolakis, Director of National Ministries for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, who shared insights on national initiatives. Greetings were also offered by Dr. Demetrios Katos, President of Hellenic College Holy Cross, who spoke about the importance of theological education in shaping future church leadership and thanked the Metropolis Parishes for their hospitality and care to the seminarians who are welcomed in their parish families every year. Jane Kourtis, President of the Metropolis Philoptochos Board, expressed gratitude for the work and dedication of Philoptochos members across the Metropolis.

Following the joint session, the conference divided into two concurrent assemblies. The Philoptochos Assembly focused on philanthropic outreach, service initiatives, and strengthening the organization’s mission within local parishes. Discussions highlighted the many ways in which Philoptochos continues to serve those in need while fostering fellowship and faith among its members.

Meanwhile, the Clergy-Laity Assembly convened a series of informative presentations addressing key areas of ministry, stewardship, and parish development. Theo Nicolakis provided an overview of the Archdiocese’s National Ministries, sharing updates on programs and digital initiatives designed to support parishes across the country. Panos Coufos presented on the Metropolis of Boston Camp, emphasizing its spiritual impact on youth and its continued role in nurturing the faith of future generations.

Costas Sideridis, Co-Chair of the Capital Campaign, gave an update on the St. Methodios Faith and Heritage Center, highlighting the progress of the new indoor gymnasium and fieldhouse. He outlined the committee’s desire, with the blessing of Metropolitan Methodios, to expand the facilities to ensure that the “campus” continues to serve user groups and support the flourishing Metropolis of Boston Camp program. Rhea Ballas presented on best practices for youth safety in parishes, emphasizing the Church’s responsibility to maintain secure and caring environments for children and young people. Melpomeni Murdakes spoke on parish planned giving in her presentation, “Transforming Our Futures: Jump-Start Parish Planned Giving,” encouraging parishes to embrace stewardship and long-term financial planning. Rounding out the morning, Alex Cooley discussed the Thriving Congregations Initiative, challenging attendees to reflect on what the next five years might look like for their parishes and how they can foster vitality and growth within their local communities.

In the afternoon, participants had the opportunity to join smaller breakout sessions with the presenters. These sessions allowed for more intimate discussions, giving attendees the chance to ask questions, exchange ideas, and gather practical tools to bring back to their parish communities. The collaborative format of the conference encouraged meaningful dialogue and the sharing of best practices among parishes across the Metropolis.

Through prayer, thoughtful presentations, and shared conversation, the Biennial Conference underscored the vital partnership between clergy, lay leaders, and Philoptochos members in sustaining the life and mission of the Church. The Metropolis extended heartfelt thanks to St. Demetrios Church in Weston for its warm hospitality and to all who contributed to the success of this year’s event.
