Thursday, April 16, 2026

Metropolitan Methodios attended the 42nd Wreath Ceremony held in conjunction with the Boston Marathon, joining civic and cultural leaders in a meaningful annual tradition. The ceremony, organized by the Consul General of Greece, the Alpha Omega Council and the 26.2 Foundation, highlights the presentation of traditional olive wreaths from Greece to the Boston Athletic Association. These wreaths are used to crown the victors of the race, symbolically linking the modern marathon to the historic Battle of Marathon in 490 BC.

In reflecting on the significance of the event, His Eminence noted the remarkable endurance and determination of the more than 30,000 athletes who participate each year in the 26.3-mile race. He also recognized the profound impact of charitable runners, whose participation is often inspired by personal experiences or the journeys of loved ones. Their efforts elevate the marathon beyond competition, transforming it into an expression of love, solidarity, and service. The ceremony and the Marathon weekend as a whole stand as a powerful witness to courage, perseverance, and unity, bringing together individuals from around the world in a shared celebration of the human spirit.
