Metropolitan Methodios Visits St. Demetrios Community in Saco, Maine for Milestone Celebration
On Sunday, October 20th, the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox community in Saco, Maine, gathered for a momentous occasion as they marked the 25th anniversary of their church’s relocation to its current home. The day was made even more special by the visit of Metropolitan Methodios, who presided over the celebrations.
Founded in 1909, the St. Demetrios community has deep roots in the area. In 1926, they purchased their first church building, and in 1936, they acquired their second building, which is now home to a Serbian Orthodox church. In the year 2000, the parish made a significant move to its present location in Saco, where it has flourished over the past quarter of a century.
The day’s liturgical celebration was a beautiful reflection of the community’s vibrancy and dedication to their faith. A highlight of the service was the tonsuring of eight young men. These new tonsured servants were joined by the youth of the community, as teenagers and young adults led the congregation in the chanting of hymns.
Following the divine service, the celebration continued with a festive luncheon attended by over 270 parishioners and friends. The overwhelming sense of gratitude and joy was palpable, as the community recognized the abundant blessings bestowed upon them by God throughout their rich history.
The luncheon also marked a significant milestone for the local chapter of Lacones, an organization that has been an integral part of the community’s efforts. This year, they celebrated their 90th anniversary.
This momentous celebration reminded everyone present of the strength and faith that has carried the St. Demetrios community through over a century of growth and transformation. The parishioners left the event feeling humbled, grateful, and excited for the future, as they continue their journey under the blessings of their Good God.
